Editorial Reviews: The Coen brothers make their finest thriller since Fargo with a restrained adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel. Not that there aren't moments of intense violence, but No Country for Old Men is their quietest, most existential film yet. In this modern-day Western, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam veteran who needs a break. One morning while hunting antelope, he spies several trucks surrounded by dead bodies (both human and canine). In examining the site, he finds a case filled with $2 million. Moss takes it with him, tells his wife (Kelly Macdonald) he's going away for awhile, and hits the road until he can determine his next move. On the way from El Paso to Mexico, he discovers he's being followed by ex-special ops agent Chigurh (an eerily calm Javier Bardem). Chigurh's weapon of choice is a cattle gun, and he uses it on everyone who gets in his way--or loses a coin toss (as far as he's concerned, bad luck is grounds for death). Just as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a World War II veteran, is on Moss's trail, Chigurh's former colleague, Wells (Woody Harrelson), is on his. For most of the movie, Moss remains one step ahead of his nemesis. Both men are clever and resourceful--except Moss has a conscious, Chigurh does not (he is, as McCarthy puts it, "a prophet of destruction"). At times, the film plays like an old horror movie, with Chigurh as its lumbering Frankenstein monster. Like the taciturn terminator, No Country for Old Men doesn't move quickly, but the tension never dissipates. This minimalist masterwork represents Joel and Ethan Coen and their entire cast, particularly Brolin and Jones, at the peak of their powers. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Comment: This film is an instant masterpiece, i dont understand people giving it bad reviews and thats why im reviewing this to praise it. Its a modern western/thriller, about a mad man on the loose and hes killing people but gets arrested and then escapes, he wants this briefcase which this deer hunter finds and he tries to track it down with a device, i wont tell you anymore about the plot because i dont want to spoil it for you. The greatness to do with this film is the tension it provides for the viewer as he is tracking down the money and the thrills of that, the acting is superb, the genius directing from the Coen Brothers and the twists and turns along the way, i can maybe think of a reason people dont like this and that is the ending is quite slowe but other than that in my opinion its very cleverly made. An absolute modern masterpiece, just watch it and you wont be dissapointed, 5 Stars without a doubt. Customer Rating: Summary: sick and pathetic Comment: I chose this film solely on it being an Oscar-winner, knowing nothing about the story. I am very disappointed. I continue to fail to see how anyone can get pleasure out of making, acting in or watching a film about a gartuitous psychopathic killer. Pathetic. While I can accept there is a market for such films, I cannot see how this one could win Best Film. Best Film should be awarded for a combination of great acting, writing, cinematography, direction, etc, not just on the basis that the viewer gets a voyeuristic thrill from seeing inocent bystanders blasted to death. There are so many great realistic stories to film, this choice for me is bizarre. Don't buy, unless gratuitous violence is your thing. Customer Rating: Summary: Totally over-hyped! Comment: On the whole very disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing this film based on very positive press reviews. The first two thirds are very good. Some of the dialogue, such as the scene where the world-weary Sherrif and his Deputy survey the carnage of the drug heist gone wrong, is outstanding. There are moments of real tension. The cat and mouse game between the two principal characters is truly gripping in places. BTW Kelly MacDonald's accent is impeccable. But, What the heck happened in the third act?? As of the point where the story reaches El Paso the story goes into meltdown. The Coens lost it. Doesn't reach any kind of point. There is no satisfying conclusion. Didn't like the direction the film took. I left the cinema feeling positively ROBBED. Also, Javier Bardem is a good actor but let's face it, anyone can play a total psycho, and while it was a competent performance I do not think it is Oscar worthy. He was just a killing machine. I didn't get any depth from the character. Customer Rating: Summary: Diefies moral reading Comment: I think (though I don't want to speak for anybody else) that the main reason some people don't like this movie is because it defies traditional moral and movie logic - there really is no moral compass here. What happens to every character is almost totally random, good deeds often results in terrible consequences and and bad deeds can go ahead unhindered - in this sense it is much truer to life, but it makes disturbing cinema where we are so conditioned to see heroes be pushed to their limits but ultimately triumph and evil doers be punished by those who suffered most at their hands. Themes of chance and determination/fate and the crossing over of unavoidable lines of force or action are the themes of this film it seems - made most vivid in the coin toss scene with the shop assistant. The abrupt ending threw me for a loop the first time as well - annoyed me and frustrated me.... but hell it also made me think about what I'd seen and that's something not many movies do - sending you off with a friendly cinematic, cathartic pat on the back. And the more I thought about it the more it seemed right, to tie everything up neatly at the end would undermine the very idea of movie itself. Be prepared to think about it a bit. Customer Rating: Summary: dull dull dull dull dull Comment: i don't really take note of the oscars especially since over looking bill murray for lost in translation, but being a big fan of javier bardem & tlj i was really looking forward to this, but if i ever bump in to the coen bruv's i will ask them for 1hr 51mins of my life back!! Was this the only film released last year?? how on earth did this win best picture?? it starts off with real promise and an hour into to it your just waiting for a few trade mark coen twists n turns but it just dies a slow painful death it never gets out of 2nd gear which is a real shame considering some good performances from bardem and the much underrated kelly mcdonald.the only films that deserve 1 star are the lion king and the 2 matrix sequals so this gets 2.come on joel & ethan you can do much better than this!!!! if you want to see a really good film from this year check out the orphanage, into the wild,the dark knight or the brill man on wire More Reviews
