Editorial Reviews:

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour and the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will.--Rickey Wright

Summary: Brilliant!!
Comment: Only bought this as it had a cover of Down in the Park and Baker Street. WOW! Whilst I am a die hard Numanoid, and also loved the Gerry Rafferty Baker Street, the reworked versions rock man! Love the album in its entirety now.

Summary: As Good As Ever
Comment: The Colour And The Shape: 10th Anniversary Edition
This album never ages. It sounds as good today as it did when it was first released. My favourite Foos album. Absolutely brilliant.

Summary: Good intro to the Foos?
Comment: I bought this album as I knew bits of the Foos but hadn't really listened to them before. The music is brilliant in parts but vocals a bit too "shouty" for my taste personally.

Summary: The best Foo Fighters- now with added B sides
Comment: This is my favourite Foo Fighters album, I have owned it for years and still play it regularly. If you are just getting into the Foos then I would buy this first. It sounds a lot crisper and finished then the first album and you can just let play the whole way through as it flows really well. It also has Dave Grohl drumming on nearly all of it.

Although I like some of the later Foo Fighters singles there hasn't been an album that has matched this. It has the well known classic singles such as 'Everlong' and 'Monkey Wrench' but also memorable album tracks such as 'Hey, Johnny Park!' and 'Up In Arms'.

Summary: The Colour And The Re-Shape
Comment: Time and again I have been disappointed by Foo Fighters albums, simply because every release after 1997 has failed to live up to The Colour And The Shape. Upon the release of every new album the band proclaim it'll be better than anything they have ever done but I don't think they will ever better this album. This is when the Foos blended blistering rock with great melodies to near perfection. Let's use Monkey Wrench as an example - a finely tuned rock beast with awesome riffs and the kind of "free spirit" passion the band has struggled to maintain since. This was an exctiting and accomplished album with almost no weak links and yet I find most of Foo Fighters new stuff relatively bland these days.

So why only three stars for such a damn good album? Well the album in its original form certainly deserves the full five stars but I can't hide the disappointment in the 6 bonus tracks - they are crap! The production isn't as good as the 13 main album tracks (presumably because the bonus tracks have not been remastered) and the vocals are dull. Most are cover versions, with the exception of Dear Lover (a reasonable track I suppose - the only one!) and The Colour And The Shape (a simply dreadful mess of a track). We also have a dull version of Baker Street..... yawn. If you don't already own The Colour And The Shape then this is the version to get (for completist reasons if nothing else) yet I can't recommend the re-release to existing owners. Unfortunately I feel I've wasted money on 6 bonus tracks I will never listen to, seeing as I already had the album.
