Summary: Producer of the LIVE RARE & UNSEEN/NEW YORK STORIES segments of THE DVD
Comment: Hello all Amazon Readers,

I produced the 'Live Rare & Unseen + New York Stories' segments of Elton
60; 25 archival videotaped performances from Elton John, which I
located, compiled, researched, and remastered (all of the Bonus material) although no credit in the booklet nor DVD jacket.

I am a little biased. I think the DVD has some of the BEST quality audio I have ever heard on an archival Music DVD. We remastered three songs from Elton's 1972 'Royal Festival Hall - Honky Chateau Live' show which featured the global debut of 'Rocket Man', 'Honky Cat', and 'Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters' all now remarried to a hitherto lost 16 track one inch master, which was mixed-down on the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio by a BAFTA nominated sound mixer, one George Foulgham. This new digitally remastered 'archival analogue audio' now accompanies this previously unseen footage. Four more songs emanate from the seldom seen 'Edinburgh Playhouse Solo Concert' from 1976, which was the first pan global satellite television transmission in colour! I located quarter inch radio stereo audio at Radio Clyde and this now accompanies the images/performances of 'Candle In The Wind', 'Daniel', 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight', and the hitherto unseen global performance debut of 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word'. Simon Heyworth co-producer of Mike Oldfield's seminal album 'Tubular Bells' remastered the audio of this show.

I also located a lost BBC TV Top Of The Pop's master of 'Goodbye Yellow
Brick Road' from 1973 which was remarried to the late Gus Dudgeon's 2000
AD multi track CD remaster. Unseen performaces of 'Believe', 'We All Fall
In Love Sometimes', and 'Border Song' (which comes from a 1970 Swiss TV
debut - and unseen since) were all audio remastered by David Woolley
who remastered all of Led Zep's recent DVD boxed set, as well as Macca's/Wings DVD output).

There are many other DVD highlights
(see amazon.co.uk ELTON 60 SPECIAL EDITION BOXED SET DVD
review by me for more detail) but, in my opinion, these are
the stand-out tracks.

Enjoy this great DVD and look out for the hidden Easter Egg of 'Saturday
Night's Alright For Fighting' from 'Thank You Australia, Sydney' (1984)
concert - the day of Elton's 37th birthday.

Summary: Elton still standing sixty years on!!
Comment: I was prompted to write this review after reading the others and feeling the need to defend Elton's voice! In my opinion (humble as it is) Elton has been at the peak of his performing life the last ten years or so and although on this DVD his voice is gruffer than ever, that is no bad thing! As a piano player and singer he's never been better, his band are tighter and if anything the 70s performances, whilst excellent, simply emphasise this!! Its seeing (and hearing) the Elton of today that makes you realise why he's a superstar!! Pish posh to anyone who says otherwise! Yes he's changed, but he's always been amazing and still is! The concert is amazing and the whole package is a treasure trove for Elton fans! Go and buy now!!

Summary: The Old Footage Makes This Purchase Worthwhile
Comment: Elton John, in common with the Rolling Stones and the odd other musical veteran, continues to record and release material both in the form of new studio recordings and live DVDs. The more recent studio recordings in some ways are more palatable than that of the DVDs because there is also sprinkled amongst Elton's rich catalogue many recordings which represent Elton in his 70s prime - by contrast within his DVD output there is next to nothing. This situation is partly rectified here with a good dozen or more performances from his 70s peak, yet in many ways this exclusively brilliant footage only goes to reinforce the significant decline in Elton's more recent performances which makes up the bulk of this package.

Of course by significant decline i'm referring to Elton's diminished vocal prowess where his former smoothness and range have now descended into a heavy gruffness which may on occasion suit the odd song a little eg 'Bennie And The Jets' but taken in larger doses Elton's heavy straining begins to grate ever more. This type of singing isn't what made Elton John the star he is today.

However, this DVD is worth buying for the sprinkling of old footage (especially the 1970-76 performances) all of which demonstrates why Elton's name stands and will always stand amongst the all time greats. It's just sad and unfortunate it isn't too obvious these days.

For the next live DVD release how about Elton's Old Grey Whistle Test Performance at the Hammersmith Odeon from 1974? - it may prove worth getting excited about!

Summary: Amazing performance and lost treasures
Comment: This boxset is a must-have for any music fan. The 3h30+ performance is just amazing from beginning to end. This includes well-known hits but also a lot of lesser known tracks that just sound beautiful. On my system the audio mix is just perfect with great surround effects in DTS. The image is also crystal-clear. The bonus include superb never-seen-before TV and concert appearences from the 70s till now. The boxset itself is superb with a 72-pages booklet including loads of nice pictures.

Summary: sound problems ruin this fantastic package
Comment: I eagerly received this in the post the other day, only to find that on both the 5.1 and stereo mixes of the programme the guitar parts are either very soft or in more cases in-audible. For a major studio release from a major artist, this sound mix is a crying shape and Universal needs to institute an exchange program with a balanced, proper audio mix. Please if anyone else has expierenced this problem please post about it.
Content otherwise is top-notch, but remember Elton John is 60 years old and has lost a lot of vocal range, showing a very deep throaty voice throughout.
